Shaping Shots

Easiest way of shaping shots is to move your left hand on your grip. When practicing through the winter give this a try. Use these pictures for reference.
The pic on the left makes the ball go more to the left, (draw) and the pic on the right makes the ball go to the right, (fade).

I would recommend the more accomplished player to experiment with this as Most mid to high handicappers dont have the correct grip anyway. It would only cause confusion!!

Please contact me for any fundamental issues. Christmas is on the way and golf lessons make a great gift!

Breathe for Touch

At address when looking along the line at the hole turn the head targetward while breathing in through the nose casually and time the completion of a not-especially-deep inspiration to coincide with the arrival of the face and gaze looking dead at the target. This is the lifting open of the bellows that expand the chest a little over a specific time. THEN JUST RELAX TO ALLOW THE BREATH TO ESCAPE SMOOTHLY as the head turns back along the line from target to ball. Nothing forced. Pause looking at the ball a moment for the gaze for the gaze and sense of balance to clarify after the head stops moving. Then start your backstroke in coordination with the same nasal in-breathing going back to the top of the backstroke, so that the chest expansion and timing of the breath establishes the backstroke length instinctively. From the top of the backstroke relax (release the bellows) to transpire as the breath escapes smoothly thru the nose.
Practiced a few times you will be amazed how much it helps the pace of your putts.

Armlock putter grip

This is a great alternative if you are used to anchoring the putter. Toatally legal as it is not anchored to the body only to the arm.
The bore in the grip, or shaft channel is angled so that the shaft aligns with the forearm giving you a loft on your putter at 2 to 3 degrees.

Hybrid Benefits

Hybrids when compared to long irons............

1. Send the ball flying higher - studies have shown a hybrid can get you 8 more yards than a typical iron.

2. The club design is superior - with a hybrid club head design, the centre of gravity is moved lower and further back from the clubface, The result? You get more trajectory and club loft.

3.More forgiving - who DOESN'T need a golf club that performs well even if the sweet spot isnt hit too often.

4. Improved shot possibilities - with a hybrid you have more options out of bad lies, tight spots and trouble situations.

Senior Swingers

It can be difficult to appreciate some of the physical restrictions in a golf swing that come with age. Firstly, try and turn the hips fully, this immediately improves your shoulder turn and improves your angles to hit the ball. You give yourself more time with a better rhythm rather than a short and snappy swing.

Secondly, let the left knee move behind the ball and the left heel to lift a little. (This is vice verse for left handers).

Thirdly, lighter shafts should be considered to achieve a higher club head speed for maximum distance.

Some seniors will benefit from thicker grips too if they suffer with arthritis in the fingers.

Get fitted by your Pro or coach, someone who knows your swing.

Trust what you have trained

Don't take your training attitude to the golf course, it will hurt your performance. Motor skills have to be ingrained on the driving range/practice area before you can put it into autopilot. However, focusing too much on how to swing, once skills have been over learned can clog up the brain.

A. Playing - learning to let it flow.
B. Practicing - Drills for playing target golf.
C. Practice in thirds. Technical. Skill specific. Course play.

Practice more random shots.

If you have too much focus on performance and not enough on enjoyment and learning, your golf game will suffer.

Believe what you feel and not what you read.

Start with a good Grip

These moulded grips are ideal to start any golfer with this most important fundamental. The grooves in the grip put your hands in the correct positions. Even established golfers get this part wrong. Changing the grip always feels the most uncomfortable thing to achieve, So I suggest you get one of these and hit balls with it to improve your grip. They are inexpensive and well worth it! Please contact me if you would like one fitted.

Golf ball performance in cold conditions

The cold weather has a dramatic effect on the golf ball. When a golf ball flies through the air it loses distance with the low temperatures, as cold air is more dense than warm air. If a golf ball gets too cold, its materials lose resilience resulting in a reduction of velocity.

If your playing in extremely cold conditions it is good to have two golf balls in your pocket and alternate the ball on each hole so you are keeping one warm. For the air temperature alone distance loss is around 15%

A lower compression ball would also help in colder conditions.

Strong Core, Strong swing

A strong core can reduce back pain. Balanced muscles in this area helps maintain appropriate posture and reduce strain on the spine.

Here are a three exercises you could do in the off season and you don't need the gym. Just done 2 to 3 times a week and you will certainly feel the difference by the start of the season.

I have found one of the most important assets, as a swing coach is to possess a knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and movement related to the golfers body to improve their golf swing.
The difference I have seen with many clients is fascinating and has brought major improvements to their technique. The golf swing can only improve if the body is programmed for the specific movements.
